With Violet!

Introduction:
Hello friends! My name is Brandi Peterson, and I'm from Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweeping down the plain. I grew up here in Oklahoma City with my parents and my dear brother, and I still call it home — now as a mom of three: an adult son we adopted through the foster care system, and two teen daughters.

When I'm not writing, I'm usually working one of my three jobs, drinking too much coffee, or tending to my goats, Violet and Doc.

As a kid, I remember my father binging on episodes of Star Trek, the original series. When the Star Wars movies got re-released in the 90's, Dad raced to get tickets for me and my brother so we could all go enjoy them just like he did when he was a kid. So to read and write science fiction today brings back those memories of spending time with my dad. He is a happily retired firefighter now by the way.

One of my professors at the University of Oklahoma taught me a lot about writing mythology and heroism and I adopted this style of writing as my own. And while I am nowhere near the level I would like to be as a writer, I know that I would not be where I am today without her advice.

All this to explain to you why my first novel, Legend of Sylphar, the Silver Queen is a sci-fi story based on the Greek mythology of Theseus and the Minotaur. I make this clear in the beginning as we see Ariadne's mother actually reading an excerpt of the story to a group of children just before a tragedy hits.

The Importance of Reading Comprehension

  Suppose your child is brilliant at crunching numbers and can memorize facts like nobody’s business, but they aren’t making much headway on their reading comprehension scores. And maybe you’ve been thinking, “What’s the big deal?”    And I am here to tell you that reading comprehension may not seem very important now, but will make learning increasingly difficult as the child gets older if they show little to no improvement.    All information is passed on from teacher (or parent) to the child through language. If the child does not fully comprehend what they are hearing, then they do not obtain the knowledge that a teacher is attempting to pass on to them. How to Build a Sandcastle (Poem)

Did you visit the beach or play in a sand box this summer? Recall those sweet memories as you enjoy this poem together. (text)   How to Build a Sandcastle By Brandi Peterson A sandy beach is a perfect spot, for building up your castle plot. Get a bucket and a shovel. Fill it up and pack it level. Now, turn it over really fast. Lift it gently to make a cast. Repeat the process one by one, until the sandy work is done. Decorate it with twigs and shells. Populate it with crabs and snails.
